Dr Waqas Hassan Tanveer
Currently Waqas is working on CO2 capture and utilization (CCUS) and emission management with Dr Enrico Andreoli at Energy Safety Research Institute (ESRI), Swansea University. His work focuses on electrochemically utilising the CO2 released during steel production and convert it into value added products. This is to be achieved through development of electrolysers and their stacking up to be ready for pilot plant based usage for industry. He has extensive experience in this field and has been working on developing electrochemical systems for almost 11 years. He completed his PhD in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Seoul National University, South Korea in 2017 and prior to coming to the UK he worked as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at National University of Science and Technology, Pakistan. He has worked with UK industrial decarbonization champion, Professor Mercedes Maroto Valer on the EPSRC funded project “Low carbon jet fuel through integration of novel technologies for co-valorisation of CO2 and biomass’” at the Research Centre of Carbon Solutions (RCCS), Heriot Watt University. For this project Dr Waqas developed a state-of-the-art Solid Oxide Electrolyser (SOEC) stack system to produce H2 rich syngas. This SOEC unit is the biggest system in terms of fuel utilization (>85%) and power production in Solid Oxide fuel cell (SOFC) mode (almost 700W) in Scotland and is the heart of the low carbon process acting as a CO2 sink. The project won first prize in the category of Transport and was highly commended in the category of sustainability at IET Innovation Awards in November 2019. Waqas is the first researcher to receive the prestigious IUVSTA-EBARA Award in July 2019 for making sustainable solutions using vacuum based technologies. Additionally, he has worked as a project manager for Creativity@Home on CCUS from 2019 -2020, where he organized several workshops via facilitators to nurture creative collaboration between academia and industry. He is also Editor and Reviewer of several top tier journals and proposals from universities in UK, UAE and Pakistan related to Low Carbon Energy/Fuel Systems and Artificial Intelligence.
